This is a great idea, too, Gini! Thank you! A student teacher told me how his dad used to have him tell how much change his dad should receive back when at the store - before the cashier would ring it up completely and give back the change. Similar idea. . .

I teach 8th grade ELA, but when I'm at the store with my own children we always play math games with our purchases. We have $100 and a long list of items to purchase. What can we afford? How many of each item can we buy? If banans are $0.69 p/lb how many pounds can we buy with $3.00? Stuff like that. They love it.

Louise,

I LOVE this idea! Thank you for sharing! I also love how your student measured a minute. So cute!

Hi Dawn (from Australia)
We have a notice board where we add our ideas each day - we have had it since beginning of the year. The heading is 'Where Maths was used today' I'm amazed the responses we get. Children respond with all sorts of ways we use Maths in our daily lives. My favourite so far is the child who wrote - I measured how long a minute is when my mum says 'just a minute'!

Eric, math journals are a fantastic way to explore math thinking, see how thinking may change over time, and as a reference for students. This book would be a great lead in to math journals!

Absolutely, Charlene! And this is a great book to use to show students that math and reading go hand in hand!

Even though I teach reading, I try to incorporate math into my class anytime that I can. Kids need to see that math and reading go hand in hand in the real world.

We use math journals to explore our thinking, glue-ins provide initial info for students and can be expounded upon in student friendly language. The journal then becomes the reference tool for the student
